Combining fitness and nutrition!

In Kindergarten, we have been working on learning the five food groups.  Here, during one of our fitness station days, students were to "buy" food at "the market" and "drive" home and put it on the correct plate.  Each hula hoop acts as a plate for a food group, and the students have to decide where it belongs.

Shown here, a couple of our overachieving 5th graders run the Pacer Test on their own time after school.  Next week we will be completing our second assessment of our cardiorespiratory endurance by running the Pacer Test again.  In September we did this, along with setting goals for our next assessment in the new year!  Students will have an opportunity to meet and BEAT those goals that they set for themselves.  We will also set or adjust our goals, based on the outcome!  As always, the credo is to "do YOUR own personal best!"

Students of all ages will complete the assessment in one way or another, with the 4th and 5th graders tracking their scores and setting goals.

*Note:  4th grade students will be beginning their Pacific Northwest Ballet Unit next week.  Mr. Barnes hopes to work with the 4th grade teachers to find an opportunity for them to shatter their goals too!

Fitness Assessments that will be conducted:

1.  Pacer Test
2.  Curl Ups in one minute
3.  Jump Ropes in 30 seconds
4.  Sit and Reach Flexibility
5.  Can I do a perfect pushup (beginning with perfect pushup position)

4th and 5th Hot Spots

Last week in class, the 4th and 5th grade got to play a great ball handling and shooting game.  The objective was to quickly dribble the ball to a spot on the floor and attempt to make a basket from that spot.  If they did, they would get to pick up the spot and bring it to their team's pile.
This game not only works on ball handling, and shooting, but also will elevate one's heart rate if played with intensity!

Taking control of our own cardiorespiratory endurance

Every month at the 2nd-5th grade level, we will be testing our cardiorespiratory endurance with runs at the beginning of class.  We began with a two minute run, and have progressed to three minutes, with four minutes on the horizon next week.  The students who run for the entirety of the set time, get to sign their name to the new poster, which hangs in the gym for the rest of the year.  Here are our first two!

December!

As we get into the cold months of December, we will be entering our ball handling unit in PE class here at Eastgate.  This will likely be a series of teachings revolving around basketball, but the underlying skill we are working on (in different levels) is dribbling and controlling the ball.

While, we will play many games and participate in many activities, here are the skill outcomes for each grade level:

K -
During the ball handling unit students will be able to dribble a ball with one hand, attempting the second contact.

1st -
During the ball handling unit students will be able to dribble continuously in self-space using the preferred hand.

2nd-
During the ball handling unit students will learn to dribble a ball with preferred hand while walking in general space.

3rd-
During the ball handling unit students will learn to dribble a ball while jogging in general space.

4th-
During the ball handling unit students will learn to dribble a ball while in self-space with both the preferred and non-preferred hands.

5th-
During the ball handling unit students will learn to dribble a ball while increasing and decreasing speed in general space.
